Recently, Associate Professor Wei Wendong and his research team have published several high-level research papers in top journals in the field of sustainable development, including two research papers in Nature Sustainability, a sub-journal of Nature, which have conducted in-depth research on the implied greenhouse gas emissions from the construction of China's power grid infrastructure and the synergistic reduction of air pollutants and carbon dioxide in the industrial sector, which are important for China to achieve the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.
The research paper "Air pollution reduction and climate co-benefits in China's industries" uses energy consumption and air pollutant emissions data from micro-enterprises in China's industrial sector. The microscopic mechanisms of synergistic reduction potential of air pollutants and carbon dioxide in China's industries are investigated in depth. The results show that technological advances in end-of-pipe treatment and energy efficiency improvements in the non-electricity sector are the most important contributors to air pollutant emission reductions during the sample period, while air pollutant emission reductions in the electricity sector are mainly due to improvements in end-of-pipe treatment technologies. The restructuring of production and electrification can bring significant indirect synergistic emission reduction benefits. For the industrial sector electrification path, the magnitude of the co-benefits depends on the cleanliness of China's power supply structure due to the differences in boiler energy conversion efficiency and transmission losses. Dr. Haoqi Qian, a young associate researcher at the Institute of Global Public Policy, Fudan University, and Shaodan Xu, a professor at the School of Economics, Fudan University, are the co-first authors of the paper, and Associate Professor Wendong Wei, Assistant Professor Jing Meng at University College London, and Professor Lipo Wu at the School of Economics, Fudan University, are the co-corresponding authors of the paper.
